Lapsang Souchong: The Smoked Tea of China with a Distinct Flavor Identity

One of the most unique black teas in our Madras.gr collection is Lapsang Souchong – the original smoked tea of China, and according to tradition, the favorite brew of the legendary Sherlock Holmes!

This is a tea with an intense aroma, known for its deep, smoky profile and earthy aftertaste. Our Lapsang Souchong 8310 comes exclusively from the Hua Tung peak of the Wuyi mountains, in the historic Fukien (Fujian) region of China – the birthplace of the finest smoked teas. Discover also, Lapsang Souchong 8312, an authentic and intensely aromatic smoked black tea from the Wuyi Shan region of Fujian province, China. The 8312 variety is distinguished by its large, glossy black leaves and its dry, smoky flavor.

The origin of Smoked Tea

The word souchong (xiao zhong), in the Fukien dialect, means “sub-variety” of black tea. According to legend, the technique of tea smoking was discovered by accident during the Qing dynasty, when soldiers temporarily occupied a tea factory. To avoid losing the harvest, the workers dried the leaves over pinewood fires. The result was a new, aromatic flavor – and the beginning of a tea tradition that would last for centuries.

How Lapsang Souchong is made:

Lapsang Souchong smoked tea is made from fresh green tea leaves, which are first withered over fires made from pine and cypress wood. Through a series of pan-firings, rollings, and fermentations, the leaves gradually absorb their signature smoky aroma. The final result is thin, black, glossy tea leaves that yield a deep red infusion.
